Where To Buy Harman Kardon HK 3490 2 x 120W Stereo Receiver

It is a great receiver! Stereo rules! The sheer QUALITY of a sound is unmatched by anything else. The included Dolby Vitual Speaker provides complete surround for action movies.
The sound quality for jazz material is AMAZING. You can spend more, I doubt you can get any better. I have DMC 1000 connected to it and it outputs to L890. It is stunning!Get more detail about Harman Kardon HK 3490 2 x 120W Stereo Receiver.

Shop For Onkyo TX-SR307 5.1-Channel A/V Surround Home Theater Receiver (Black)

It's my own fault. I didn't fully understand all the technical terms.
The unit has pass through HDMI connections which require additional audio connections to the component inputs from the TV to the receiver. Splitters are required because there is only one audio output from the TV and three component devices supported. I wanted to avoid the extra audio cables. Should have purchased a different (more exprnsive) model.Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR307 5.1-Channel A/V Surround Home Theater Receiver (Black).

Pyle - Mini 2x75W Stereo Power Amplifier - PCA3

I had to send back the one I received because it wasn't manufactuered properly and was causing massive amounts of radio interference on the speakers I hooked it up to unless I turned up the volume and had music running constantly. Same speakers worked fine with a PTA model Pyle amp. PTA amps I get the impression are newer and have more features. I don't know if this PCA-3 was just a defective one or if it's a design fault, but that was my experience.Get more detail about Pyle - Mini 2x75W Stereo Power Amplifier - PCA3.

Sony STR-DG520 5.1 Audio Video Receiver - Black Top Quality

The other reviews of this product, were VERY helpful in letting me make an informed decision! It has 2 HDMI inputs, but as others have said, the receiver does not process the audio from the HDMI signal. There are 2 digital audio inputs. One optical, and one using a single RCA plug. I have the HDMI from my high def cable box plugged into the port for "DVD", and my HDMI upconverting DVD player is plugged into the "BD" blue-ray disk port. The digital audio ports are associated with those HDMI ports. I would have preferred only using one cable per device, but this is what I found at this price point. I was not willing to pay an extra $200 to have the receiver process sound over HDMI.

The sound balance was somewhat challenging to configure, for my hodgepodge of speakers. The front left/right are some big towers that were all the rage when I was in college. I can't bear (yet) to part with the speaker war beasts, from my dorm daze. (...or is that supposed to be days?) The center channel is a shielded Boston Acoustic bar that was actually intended for this purpose. The rear channels are some little off brand things, that I bought to go in a car, many years ago. The speaker set-up actually lets you specify (within certain parameters) what kind/size speakers you have in different positions. The intention seems to be, that if you have a center channel speaker without a big woofer, but your side channels do have a big woofer, you can send the bass to the sides. I'm using 5 speakers, without the +1. I get lots more bass from my side channel towers than my neighbors are likely to enjoy. At least this way the speakers are on stands, and not pointed at the floor like most sub-woofers. So far no complaints from the neighbors, and the sound is awesome.

I would have liked the receiver to allow me to choose which device names and cable combinations went together. My solution was to buy a Sony universal remote. When I press the button on remote to change to the "DVD" signal, it switches to the audio/video for my DVD player (even though the receiver says it's in "BD" mode, since that's the ports I had to use). When I press the "TV" button on my remote, the receiver goes into "DVD" mode, which is where my cable box is attached. Unless you are using digital audio from a DVD player and a blue-ray player (and why would you have both if your BD player can upconvert regular DVDs) you'll need to do some similar mis-labeling. It only has two digital audio inputs, but I'm amazed how much better the sound is, over my 15 year old Sony surround receiver.

I'm satisfied at the price point. The sound is great, and after a bit of fussing, it works how I want it to.Get more detail about Sony STR-DG520 5.1 Audio Video Receiver - Black.

Pyle PTA1000 1000W Professional Power Amplifier This instant

This power amp was bought to replace a Carver Cube that blew out after about 25 years of use. The price of the unit was my primary reason for this purchase.

My major complaint is that the dual cooling fans are too loud. At lower listening volumes, you can definitely still hear them running. I am going to have to figure out where I can mount this unit in an enclosed area that will mask the noise while still providing enough circulation for cooling, however since I don't plan on running this unit at high power very often, I don't believe that this will be a problem.

A minor niggle is that the unit also has no RCA-in jacks, I needed to run to Radio Shack and pick up a pair of RCA to mail 1/4 inch plugs to hook this up to my preamp. On the positive side, the unit seems to be well built, and it sounds great. From the owner's manual, which for some reason, is not available on Pyle's website, the unit puts out 250W X 2 at 0.1% distortion into 8 ohms on 2 channel stereo operation.

I guess that when Pyle calls this a "professional power amp" they really mean it.Get more detail about Pyle PTA1000 1000W Professional Power Amplifier.

Onkyo HT-RC180 7.2-Channel A/V Surround Home Network Receiver (Black) Best Quality

The Onkyo HT- RC 180 is an outstanding home theater system. I was able to replace my old receiver with the Onkyo in about 15 minutes and had my HDTV, Blu Ray, and Cable Box all connected via HDMI and functioning perfectly. (Just a little note you have probably seen before but DO NOT spend a lot of money for HDMI cables, it means nothing to overpay for them).

I did have a small issue with the sound balance at first so I called Onkyo Customer Service and the tech I spoke with was awesome, patient, and he knew EXACTLY what to do to resolve the issue. Two thumbs up for Onkyo customer service.

The remote is excellent. I had that working all of my devices in 5 minutes, and the step by step directions that teach you how to "teach" the buttons on the Onkyo remote commands from an existing remote are extremely easy to follow. This is really cool, especially the features from the cable box DVR commands.

While we have not hooked up speakers in other rooms and used the "zone" feature the directions are very straightforward.

I highly recommend this device to anyone who is looking to upgrade their home system.

Denon AVR1610 5.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver with 1080p HDMI Connectivity Buy Now

Since I'm brand new to the A/V world, I did a lot of researching before making my decision on which receiver to buy. I worked hard to figure out all the lingo and I checked out just about every option available below $400, including those with built-in DVD players, etc. I read every review I could find ([...] is great for this), posted questions on the AVS forums, etc. I'm very thorough when I'm spending a lot of money like this.

I didn't need a 7.1 system so I focused on 5.1 systems. Even though I'm only using a 2.0 setup right now (front left and right speakers only), I want to be able to add the other speakers and a sub in the future. So my review is only on my 2.0 setup. I can't provide any feedback on a full 5.1 surround setup.

One of the things I was looking for was upconverting (the ability to plug all of my components (HDMI, component cable, and composite) into the receiver and run 1 HDMI cable out to the TV for the video and speaker wires out to the speakers for audio). You can use the HDMI for audio too if you want to use your TV speakers, but if you're buying a good receiver, it just makes sense to buy some decent speakers to take advantage of it. Upconverting was essential for me since I'm mounting the TV on the wall about 15' away from the receiver and didn't want to buy lots of long cables for each type of input and then have to run them behind the wall. I was also looking for a receiver with lots of inputs to handle all of my components (HD DVR, Wii, DVD player, video baby monitor) and still have room to add more pieces in the future.

I'm happy to report that I am extremely satisfied with my purchase. The receiver does a good job of upconverting the analog video inputs and they all look pretty nice on my 46" LCD. The video from HDMI inputs looks amazing. For audio, I'm using Focal XL speakers and they sound great! They provide lots of bass and dialogue is nice and clear. I haven't run the Audyssey program yet because the TV isn't on the wall yet but it sounds great even without having run it. I will provide an update once I get everything in it's final place. I just wanted to get my initial review posted since there aren't many on Amazon yet and I wanted to let everyone know that this is an excellent choice.

The only drawback I can think of is that the manual isn't super helpful. You can find lots of help online, especially at batpig.com. Don't worry, it is a legit site. You can google it if you'd like. It is an excellent information resource for Denon receivers.

Video processing is excellent, but audio quality is terrible. At low volume levels, there is distortion and hiss as loud as the music. I really want to like this receiver. It has simple setup, built-in auto-EQ, priced reasonably well, and switches four HDMI inputs. Unfortunately, I had to send it in for repair the first time I connected an HDMI source, because of "hum" on the HDMI audio. After repair it worked well until now, when all HDMI has failed. Its still under warranty, but I expected an Onkyo to be better than this.Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR606 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

Lowest Price Yamaha RX-V463BL 525 Watt 5.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver

Last Sunday I ordered the V463 from Electronics Expo through Amazon.com. Imagine my surprise on Thursday when I found out that they had sent me the wrong receiver! Instead of the V463 they had sent the V465. The V465 goes for almost $100 MORE than the V463 and has more HDMI jacks. Electronics Expo explained that they had sold out of the V463. Plan on buying the V463 and read the reviews for the V465 since--and I won't guarantee it--you will probably receive the V465. Of course, the receiver is terrific and so is Electronics Expo.

Low Price Marantz SR6003 Audio Video Receiver

Easy to set up. Sound and video is excellent. The sound quality is very clean and neutral reproducing live music very naturally. The included microphone made speaker setup a breeze. The video quality is the best I have personally ever seen. My cable does not pix-elate any more. Everything is crisper and brighter than before. It is running a 52" Mitsubishi DLP. For speakers I have Aperion 6T towers, 6C center, 5B rears and the bravias 10D sup.Get more detail about Marantz SR6003 Audio Video Receiver.

Save Yamaha RX-V465BL 525 Watt 5-Channel Home Theater Receiver

So this is the first receiver that I have ever purchased and the sound is amazing (it is paired with Klipsch B-3 and S-3). The only reason that I did not give it 5 stars (and it is my own fault) is because it does not have an A/B speaker set. So if I ever want to add speakers to another room I will need to add a stereo amplifier. I wish that I had just given it a little more thought, then I could have purchased the Yamaha RX-V663 (for an extra $30).

So if you are absolutely certain that you only want this for a 5.1 home theater and music for ONLY 1 ROOM then this is a fantastic receiver, but if you are not certain then [...]Get more detail about Yamaha RX-V465BL 525 Watt 5-Channel Home Theater Receiver.

Discount Onkyo TX-SR876 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)

This is a REALLY nice receiver... and I got it [...]. The funny thing is... I could not resist the Reon. Even though I use "through" setting for just about all of the video inputs. The hdmi switching is just tediously slow, otherwise, due to varying directv channel-changing resolutions. And even if I used the Reon, my plasma displays native 768p, thereby requiring reprocessing regardless of how the Reon is used. So... I can honestly say that I'm not fully benefiting from the Reon, even though it seemed so vital at the time of purchase. Maybe I'll feel different when I upgrade to a 1080p display.

The sound is very good. The sound options are plenty. But I was never shocked and amazed by the overall sound upgrade from my 9 year old receiver. I upgraded the FW, no problem. Audyssey setup is a breeze (if you can get the family to leave the house for 1-2 hours). The universal remote works great for me. I certainly recommend it as a great product. I just probably could have been as happy with the 806, or some lower model within the next generation of Onkyos. Just my 2 cents.

Overall... glad I have it, though.Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR876 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

Cheapest Denon AVR2310CI 7.1-Channel Multi-Zone Home Theater Receiver with 1080p HDMI Connectivity

I chose the Denon 2310ci for several reasons. One is prior experience with my Denon 1903. Denon makes some very powerful and reliable products. The 2310ci has lots of features and plenty of power. The advantages of the Audyssey setup cannot be overstated. This is not a simple graphic equalizer. The resulting sound quality is impressive. I'm driving a set of Definitive Technology Mythos series of speakers and the realism and soundstage size is breathtaking. This receiver has almost every feature you could want and enough juice to power almost any speakers.

As to video, I use the receiver to feed my 60" Pioneer Kuro 141FD plasma via HDMI and the PQ is perfect. Switching inputs is fast.

This is one of the best values in receivers in today's marketplace, IMO, and I couldn't be happier with my purchase.Get more detail about Denon AVR2310CI 7.1-Channel Multi-Zone Home Theater Receiver with 1080p HDMI Connectivity.

Cheap Denon AVR-1609 7.1-Channel Multi-Zone Home Theater Receiver

Was just looking for a basic receiver to replace an old one that died. It was just for some speakers I have outside & in a formal dining area. I've already got 2 pretty nice Denon's for the 2 home theater areas in my house, and love them. Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this one on sale for just over $200 with free delivery.

Delivery was quicker than promised and it came in perfect condition. Crutchfield was excellent. They even provided their own guides on hookup & tips.

Haven't really cranked it yet - it really just runs 'background music' - but I think it would be OK. Has a ton of options / inputs / outputs on it, including the Denon Multi zone, an ipod connection (controller sold separately), and satellite radio connection, so I would think it would have enough variety & capabilities for the average user.

And again, for the price, I don't think you can beat it.

Would definitely order from Crutchfield again, too.

Buying Denon AVR790 7.1-Channel Multi-Zone Home Theater Receiver with 1080p HDMI Connectivity

Pros
Good sound
Lots of connection
HDMI Pass-through

Cons
Weird remote
Worse-than-Atari On-screen menu

My favorite part is definitely the HDMI pass-through. It's the only name-brand receiver in this price range that I'm aware of to have this feature. With TV, I only use the receiver when watching movies, sports or special events so this feature allowed the TV speaker to be used when the receiver is not turned on.

The remote is weird and not very user friendly. The rudimentary graphic of the on-screen menu reminds me of the old Atari 2600 but only worse.

Overall I'm quite happy, as I was able to buy this receiver and the iPod dock for under $500 total.Get more detail about Denon AVR790 7.1-Channel Multi-Zone Home Theater Receiver with 1080p HDMI Connectivity.

Buy Onkyo TX-SR706 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)

Pros:

Has all of the sound decoding choices that you can possibly need for a very long time to come. It has four HDMI inputs. Can be fully operated with or without the remote control...all buttons are on the front of the receiver. You don't even need to turn on the TV to view the internal menu. It can be viewed through the display panel window on the front of the receiver. Just press receiver button and then set up button. This receiver delivers incredibly big, clean, beautiful full sound. Smart, easy, intuitive remote control. Beautifully, well thought out menu. Thoughtful back panel that makes putting in speaker wires way less painful. Un-selfish, non-proprietary inner-workings that allow you to play well with the other components that you are using. Has function to take max volume off internally (in menu) and thus gives you plenty of sound while you are still in the negative volume numbers. Let's you start your receiver with a low volume of your choice so that you won't blow your speakers. Sweet. I can use receiver with the TV on or off. That's just real smart.

Other Thoughts:

I hope that you don't mind me sharing the benefits of my experience with the receiver and I hope that it will be a great help to you.
This is my second Onkyo receiver. I had the TX-SR606 a little under a year but sold it so that I could get the extra ten watts that the 706 receiver affords. I have JBL speakers from a previous 5.1 system that are 100 watts so I always wanted This 100 watt receiver but couldn't afford it at the time. My point is that the previous receiver, the 606, had the same abilities (Except THX and the extra 10 watts) but I couldn't get the benefits of it until I had the PROPER blue ray player to compliment it. These receivers were tremendously built to supply you with the very latest that technology has to offer.
I just purchased two back speakers (enery speakers sold at New Egg) and the new Play Station3 Slim SPECIFICALLY to compliment THIS receiver. I also have the original Play Station 3 but the new PS3 SLIM is the one that sells for 300.00 and has the new chipset that decodes the DTS HD Master Audio and True HD sounds. I'm mentioning the PS3 so that all are who are reading this understands just how to get all that this receiver has to offer and understand how it all works together.
So, here are the mistakes that I made and the things that I learned.

The Onkyo technicians stepped me through the following settings and helped me to understand why and how everything worked (various components with one another) and all of the things needed to get the most out of the receiver. So here goes.

No matter what anyone tells you, you won't see your receiver flash across the words DTS Master HD or True HD without a blue ray player that has a chipset in it that plays Master HD or True HD. Also remember that DTS is not the same as DTS Master Audio. DTS Master Audio is the one that will allow you to hear sounds through all seven speakers and some sounds are only available using an HDMI connection so just play it safe and always use HDMI.
I hope that you can appreciate what it means to have a 1080P TV, the Play Station 3 that puts out every music and movie sound (DTS HD Master audio, True HD, and many others) and then to have this receiver that allows it all to play through it's circuitry.
I put in a movie called "The Punisher" and saw the receiver display say MASTER HD. You see, the movie must have an audio track that says 7.1 DTS Master Audio on it before your receiver can decode that particular sound. This movie has such an audio track (always check the back of the box on all blue ray discs to see what the audio will be. It sounded so incredible that I wanted to cry.
It's important to understand this because I looked for this on my Onkyo 606 front panel display window for all of that time without the knowledge that my play station 3 had not, at the time, have these decoding and, therefore, my receiver couldn't play it. I thought that there was something wrong with the receiver. The music sounds so wonderful on this receiver that I've become an audiofile.
Regarding various sound decoding, you MUST let your blue ray player select the various decoding settings, DTS, True HD, etc. You do this by going into the BLUE RAY player's menu and choosing them. Only then, can the 706 receiver play those great sounds. By choosing bit stream instead of linear in the blue ray player settings, the Onkyo 706 will play all of the sounds. You will never want to go to a movie again. Onkyo was very helpful in helping me understand how these things work and I feel very much like an expert.
Now I'll comment on the topic of up scaling. I don't upscale. I don't like a picture to appear stretched. Be sure to make sure that your cable box is properly formatted. I just spent the last month thinking that there was something wrong with the 706 receiver. I called Onkyo at least four times and the cable company even more than that. For whatever reason, even thought my cable settings read as if it was formatted, it wasn't and caused me to think that the "pass through" function on the receiver wasn't functioning properly. Once again, there was nothing wrong with the receiver. Instead, the cable box was frozen internally. I took it back and got a new one and now I'm in seventh heaven.
Also, be sure to unplug the receiver each and every time you want to make any changes to the wires or cables. The receiver protects itself so that you CAN'T blow it out. Be very sure to go into the menu and make sure that the Zone 2 setting is set to "Not Act" if you are not using the receiver in 2 different rooms. Again, if you have all 7 speakers set up but you are using them all in one room, zone 2 should NOT be active. If you see the red indicator light on and then right under that light, you see the green light on, and you are not using the system in 2 rooms, you need to press the zone 2 button on FRONT OF THE RECEIVER to "off ". A lot of folks think that the receiver isn't working but it's fine. Heck, more then fine. Just unplug the receiver, wait a bit, and try again. You can also use the display panel on the front of the receiver to manually go to the set up menu and get to whatever part of the menu that you need to in order to make any changes that you need to. These new Hi-Def receivers have different rules.
All of the new receivers get hot. Let it breathe. It's normal. It is supposed to make a clicking sound when you switch from CD to DVD or Cable. It's called switching and it's a beautiful sound. The click let's you know that it switched. I think that I am an expert now and have helped at least two other people set their systems up. I'm just a grandmother that was forced to learn how to work this stuff just because I couldn't hear my TV dialog well.

Order Yamaha RX-V663BL 665 Watt 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver

I have had the Rx-V663 for about 14 months. The HDMI went out & I took it to BB for repairs 6 weeks ago. Yamaho says it will take 18 weeks (yes, WEEKS!) to get the part and pointed out that their warranty allows them up to 6 months to repair an item and if they replace it they can send a reconditioned unit. This is extremely poor customer service but Yamaha apparently does not care. Where To Buy Harman Kardon AVR-154 5x30W 5.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver

I have just opened the box and tested this unit, have not had a chance to install. However, it may be a while before I can and this unit certainly deserves some praise. I have been an audio hobbyist for years, as well as a professional musician/production person at night. I build my own speakers, and have regular experience tuning and troubleshooting pro-audio systems in a variety of venues. I favor simplicity over complexity, always cut before boost, etc.. One of those guys that works with music enough that the home system is always a simple, purist approach with older tried-and-true hardware.

So-- I wired the AVR-154 into an old (early 70s) single pioneer 4-way floor speaker. Not even running in stereo. No comb effects. Speaker in the center of the wall. No reflections.

This unit is crystal clear, clean. Lows are pronounced, realistic, full but tight. Highs are not rolled off early, yet are present without any distortion that I can hear. Tight sound. Knowing what it sounds like to stand next to the drums, bass, keyboard, and hear everything happening around me, this receiver gave me a similar feeling. I could hear the instrumentation.Get more detail about Harman Kardon AVR-154 5x30W 5.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver.

TEAC AG-790A Stereo Receiver

Would be nice if it had more inputs, but I was able to use a switchbox to allow my iPod, my Rio MP3 player, and my PC to share the Aux input. Other than that, it works just fine.

I was concerned that my 30 year old Advent speakers were about to go, but replacing the receiver has made them sound like new again, so I guess it was the receiver with the problem, not the speakers.

Easy to set up, easy to use. Definitely recommended if you are not looking for surround sound, but just a solid stereo receiver.Get more detail about TEAC AG-790A Stereo Receiver.

Yamaha RX-397 100 Watt Natural Sound AM/FM Stereo Receiver Review

I purchased my first Yamaha receiver in 1979, a CR-640 model. I spent the next 30 years with the best sound quality i have ever heard! It was still preforming like new except for a little static in the volume knob, until I lost my mind and hooked my new TV to it and forgot to turn the power off. OH NO! After checking on repairs, i discovered it would be far cheaper to buy new. UPGRADE, they call it. I had doubts that anything on the market today could compare with the quality of my old 640, and I was right. Although i can't say i regret the purchase, it just doesn't come close to the sound quality and richness of tone that my old model had. It is a excellent receiver at a good price, and anyone who had never heard a 1979 model 640 would be very pleased with the new model. Needless to say my old model will be going in for repairs, who knows it my last another 30 years! That says alot for Yamaha, I think. The old 640 would have probally lasted a life time, if not for my error! This new model is very simalier in design, and very easy to operate. It just goes to show they don't make quality like they use to. But never the less, I will always own a Yamaha!!Get more detail about Yamaha RX-397 100 Watt Natural Sound AM/FM Stereo Receiver.

Motorola Signal Booster 2-Port BDA-S2 Cable Modem TV HDTV Amplifier Top Quality

This amp fixed the problems I was having with intermittent Internet failure and spotty HD channels. The HD channel problem only affected a few stations (in a certain channel # range which included some of my favorite channels!). The intermittent cable modem connection failure occurred after hours of workable use. The modem reported -5 to -7 dBV before the amp and -9 when using a splitter. When using the amp (which is labeled with a 11dB boost on its front, NOT 12x boost), the cable modem received +7 dBV and the HDTV returned to normal. I decided to get this amp both to have a potentially lower power boost than the single port version and to avoid having to buy a high quality splitter. Even using RG-59 cable to the drop amp is working fine. I'm using the included power adapter with my own RG-6 coax (the box does not include any cables) and RG-6 cables out of the box. As the manual says, any unused output ports need to be terminated with 75 ohms to work properly. Note: you can also use other options including powering the amp through a TV's outlet for attic use with an optional power splitter.Get more detail about Motorola Signal Booster 2-Port BDA-S2 Cable Modem TV HDTV Amplifier.

Onkyo HT-S3200 5.1-Channel Home Entertainment Receiver/Speaker Package.

Bought this system from NewEgg, so hopefully my comments still apply.
Positives:
- Sounds beautiful
- Easy setup. The receiver, speakers and the entire wires are all color coded. No thinking involved at all, just match them up.
- Intuitive menus and controls. Simple to adjust the amount of bass, and switch between surround sound and music modes. All the functionality is accessible from the buttons on the receiver and the remote control.
- Large one line display is clear and can be read from afar.
- Receiver supports 7.1 if you ever want to get more speakers.

Negatives:
- Most connections are useless. HDMI passthrough defeats the purpose of making the Onkyo receiver the main hub of cables. Instead, I hook up all my systems to my TV using HDMI cables, and run one optical audio cable from my TV output to the receiver.
- Cables are short. Specs from the manual are: 11 ft (front), 10 ft (center), 13 ft(subwoofer), 26 ft(surround)
- Cables are very brightly colored. Its a little weird having bright red, blue, purple and green wires running all over the room.

All the shortfalls can be rectified by getting your own cables and wires. The rest of the system works perfectly and sounds great.Get more detail about Onkyo HT-S3200 5.1-Channel Home Entertainment Receiver/Speaker Package.

Pioneer VSX-519V-K 5-Channel A/V Receiver (Black) Get it now!

I have had a Playstation 3 hooked up to an Insignia receiver and an older Samsung CRT (tube) HDTV. I wanted to upgrade my components, so I started with audio. I figured that since I wanted to upgrade, I should go for HD sound. As you may, or may not know the PS3 (among various other Blu-ray players) decodes HD audio (TrueHD, DTS HD-MA, etc.) so I did not need to spend more money on a receiver that decodes these. This receiver fit the bill almost perfectly. The only problems I really have with it is the lack of HDMI inputs (there are only 2) and the lack of a second set of speaker inputs (or B speakers). Even though neither one is a huge deal breaker for me. To offset these minor gripes the receiver has excellent sound, only 0.05 THD (distortion), tremendous power (110 watts per channel), and can take audio through HDMI. The reciver looks pretty slick as well (no excessive lights). For the price range this receiver can do HD sound for most blu-ray players and sounds better than most receivers twice the price. I am very happy with this purchase and would easily recommend this receiver to anyone.Get more detail about Pioneer VSX-519V-K 5-Channel A/V Receiver (Black).

Pioneer VSX-819H-K 5-Channel A/V Receiver (Black) Buy Now

I've had this receiver for more than 4 months and I am very pleased with the performance. I havent hooked it up to all my surround speakers, just using the front 3 speakers and subwoofer and its still good.
The setup is pretty simple, i have it hooked up to my DVD player using HDMI as well as my set top box and CD player.
The only problem is that I havent been able to connect my ipod Mini. It doesnt seem to support this particular version of ipod. I guess I have to upgrade my ipod.

Onkyo TX-8255 Stereo Receiver Decide Now

Onkyo TX-8255 Stero Receiver. A great receiver. Only short coming is the lack of a loudness control. However you can mostly compensate by adjusting the treble and bass controls. Crisp, clear sound. Have owned a number of Onkyo products. I am still running a (higher lever) Onkyo receiver that I bought in 1992. Still like new. But my Onkyo 6-disc CD player bought the same year crapped out about 5 - 6 years ago. Onkyo products always seem to be highly rated by major consumer magazines.Get more detail about Onkyo TX-8255 Stereo Receiver.

Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black) Right now

This receiver was to replace an old Yamaha unit that was in a class above this unit back in the day. However as HDMI and other features have become the standard, it was about time to upgrade. This receiver should rank in the +1000 price range, but I purchased it for much less. It also has THX, Audessey, and 5 HDMI ports. I won't be running out any time soon! For those that haven't used the Audessey feature before, it automatically adjusts the sounds using an internal setup and included microphone. It makes setting up your HT a breeze! However, if you're getting an error from your rear speakers, its because you should be plugging them into the side outlets, instead of rears. You will be highly satisfied with this receiver!!! Highly recommended.Get more detail about Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black).

Lowest Price Pioneer VSX-919AH-K 120 Watts A/V Receiver with Full Color GUI/OSD, Advanced MCACC and Analog to HDMI Up-Conversion (Black)

Searched high and low all over the internet for a relatively cheap and high quality receiver before deciding on this one. I'm by no means an expert (or even amateur) at home theatre systems, but i was able to set this up with my 7.1 surround sound in a matter of minutes and I love the atmosphere it creates in my room.Get more detail about Pioneer VSX-919AH-K 120 Watts A/V Receiver with Full Color GUI/OSD, Advanced MCACC and Analog to HDMI Up-Conversion (Black).

Low Price Pyle PP-999 Phono Turntable Pre-Amp

This pre-amp device installed easily, without a ground wire, and worked perfectly. The specs didn't tout an RIAA Equalization capability but I figured it must have one or else it couldn't be a phono pre-amp. Apparently it does as the sound on the DVD is just like the LP, except better as I used Magix Audio Cleaning Lab to clean up the LP noise. Buy one in confidence. (You can get a 15-day free trial of Magix Audio Cleaning Lab software that is extendible for another 30 days.)Get more detail about Pyle PP-999 Phono Turntable Pre-Amp.

This is a great receiver i would recommend it to anyone especially for the price. The only thing the would make it even better is to have an on screen display. Discount Sony STR-DH500 5.1-Channel A/V Receiver (Black)

This is a good basic version of A/V receiver. I am mainly using it to connect my In-Sealing BOSE speakers.
PROS: Good Sound Quality for that price
CONS: all DMPORT accessories are expensive (in retrospect may be a YAMAHA receiver would have been better for me), can't connect my laptop/mp3 player/iPhone without the expensive SONY accesories

Cheapest Sherwood RX-4105 Stereo Receiver

Works fine. Good remote control. The receiver has a good feature of being able switch tone back and forth between a self selected sound or what is being send by the medium, DVD, CD, TV. And it is really low priced!

Buying Sony STRDG820 7.1 Audio Video Receiver - Black

I would not call myself a super-sophisticated audiophile but we do listen to music, play games, watch HD TV and Blu-ray movies and, occasionally, we listen to the radio. Our new acquisition - this Sony STRDG820 - we credit with enhancing all of the above and it does it (with some help - see below) for a VERY low price, considering the features, half of which I will probably never use.

QUICK EVALUATION

This is my quick evaluation, on Amazon's 1-5 stars scale. I will enter the 'star value' first for the sake of a better alignment:

- 5.0 - Packaging. Nothing to complain, really. All was there (batteries included), well cushioned and protected and easy to get at.
- 3.0 - Physical design and ergonomics. It's boxy and the buttons aren't that intuitive either on the receiver's face or on the remote. This in contrast to the nicely done I/O ports layout on the back.
- 5.0 - Physical setup. Easy. All inputs and outputs, and there are many, are logically grouped and easy to locate.
- 4.0 - Logical setup. Relatively easy. Auto calibration is available for the speakers, for example, but coming back later and customizing everything manually is HIGHLY recommended. The receiver doesn't know whether speakers are attached and it must be 'told' and, as I am currently waiting for a new set of speakers, it doesn't know that I don't have a woofer (the one that I have is not compatible with this receiver).
- 3.0 - Operation. This is where 'help' came from a Logitech Harmony Universal Remote. The supplied remote control does the job but, with so many functions and jammed onto that little magic wand, almost everything requires several button pushes, and they had to be the 'right' buttons in the right sequences - see the manual.
- 4.5 - Versatility. This is based on my limited experience. I am trying to be 'all-HDMI' but my satellite receiver had a port problem and, until it was replaced, I had to output it to the receiver through component video and a Toslink cable for sound. Easier done than said, literally. When the Satellite box was replaced, changing the configuration was as easy as unplugging the component/Toslink cables and plugging in the HDMI. Certain options such as XM radio or iPod interfacing may require additional hardware. Speakers can be configured in many different ways.
- 5.0 - Video output. It's simply superb - 1080p without breaking a sweat. I only tested input through component and HDMI and it's perfect, including the lip sync part.
- 5.0 - Audio output. Meets and exceeds expectations. There are many bells and whistles (read the specs) and careful, manual calibration and setup can produce one's dream sound system, for less.
- 4.5 - Power. It's adequate for our large room.
- 4.0 - Value. Competition is tough in the field and there are alternatives priced within Sony's ballpark.

Overall rating: 4 stars.

WHAT YOU GET

- The STRDG820 AV receiver body itself
- Remote control (with batteries)
- AM and FM antennas
- Manual in English (100+ pages)
- Manual in Spanish (100+ pages)
- Warranty papers, disclaimers, warnings, etc.

PRACTICAL CONCERNS

As I mentioned above, the remote is not exactly the best layout, most intuitive control device once can think of. Pre-setting a radio station, for example, can't be done unless one studies the manual and this is true for many operations and functions. I understand that the initial setup, calibration and fine-tuning should be done with a manual nearby but most of us don't expect to need it when we want to listen to the radio or to switch from TV to DVD. In my case, all it was made VERY easy because we already had a Logitech Harmony 900 Remote Control (Black) (and most other Harmony models should do the job) but, considering that the Harmony costs more than the receiver itself, this may not be a good option for everybody.

Another issue was the woofer. The one we had attached to our pre-existing Bravia system was the kind that was powered by the receiver and was connecting through 'normal' speaker wires. It is not supported by the 820. We were ordering new speakers anyway - an Onkyo set, actually :) - so this is not a big concern to us but it's worth mentioning.

There's not much to say at this time other than READ THE MANUAL. As inexpensive as it is, relatively speaking, this is a very complex piece of entertainment hardware and it just can't be 'winged'. It is possible to have it output some decent sound just by connecting speaker, running the auto-calibration and plugging in a couple of wires but that would only give you a 'good' system and it would be a shame since this can be fine-tuned into a GREAT system.Get more detail about Sony STRDG820 7.1 Audio Video Receiver - Black.

Buy Sony STR-DH700 7.1-Channel A/V Receiver (Black)

This system was for my room with the idea that one day it might be my own living room entertainment system. This system comes with its own self calibration, and is capable of 7.1 surround out of the box. Got a 200 watt down blast Yamaha sub-woofer and truthfully have not had a chance to use it at full capacity, but why would anyone want to. I could light up a backyard with this system if I wanted. At full blast I can clearly hear this system throughout the house.
I am sure this system is not as nice as some of the more expensive systems, however, this equiptment is totally capable of taking care of any of your in house listening enjoyment. So, unless you are a professional and have to entertain a ball room, you will not go wrong with this system. As for the three on the set up of this system. It is a stereo system, setting it up is always going to suck. You have a load of wires and jacks to hook up. You want decent sound, you are going to have to do the hoof work.Get more detail about Sony STR-DH700 7.1-Channel A/V Receiver (Black).

Purchase Onkyo TX-SR507 5.1-Channel A/V Surround Home Theater Receiver (Black)

Order Sony STR-DH100 2-Channel Audio Receiver (Black)

I've had this receiver for three-weeks now & so far, so good. I purchased it to replace an existing Sony receiver that I'd had for seven years which started to fail (constant static from left speaker). I use this receiver to listen to radio, CDs, and internet radio/iTunes music through my laptop.

Pros:
Great price.
Sounds better (stronger) than my old 100w receiver.
Easy to hook up.
Looks good.
Free shipping from Amazon (always a pro).

Cons:
I do not like the input selection dial that lets you select what you're listening to (CD, video, FM, AM, etc.). I liked my older Sony better (push button).
Kind of a pain switching between radio selection mode & preset station mode. Once again, I liked my older Sony better (each preset had its own button).
Speaker selection (A, B, A&B, none) is also different. You keep pushing the button to rotate through those choices. Again, I liked it better on my older model (each speaker had it's own button).

I must admit that I do not use the remote that came with the unit. Looking at the remote it appears that some of my complaints would be covered, however I have enough remotes in my life already and find it easier to use the unit's controls rather than fumble with the remote.

My cons appear to be greater in number than my pros, but overall I really like the improved sound over my older unit. I'm sure I'll get used to the differences and heck, maybe even put batteries in my remote & give that a try!!

If you're looking for a great sounding, easy to hook up, and inexpensive receiver I'd give this one a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Good luck! Get more detail about Sony STR-DH100 2-Channel Audio Receiver (Black).

Where To Buy Onkyo TX-SR607 7.2-Channel A/V Surround Home Theater Receiver (Black)

Got this receiver few days back. The sound quality is definitely much better than other similar-priced mid-range receivers. The good thing that I like about this product is that it can take your average bookshelf speakers and turn them into a functional home theater system.

however I have been struggling get it work with my HTPC. All my hi-def truHD content is on my media center pc. All my connections are HDMI only. However it doesn't work. No video from TX-SR607. I specifically asked the sales person about ability to connect this product with a HTPC. And he promised it will work. But it didn't. Onkyo tech support, AV Forums haven't rendered any solutions yet.

If anyone has been able to use TX-SR607 with their Media Center PC (mine is windows7 htpc with HDMI/HDCP capable video card.) successfully -- please help me. My HTPC works fine if directly connected to TV.

Overall great product. Will give four stars if the htpc/receiver works. If not I am planning to return it.
