It's my own fault. I didn't fully understand all the technical terms.
The unit has pass through HDMI connections which require additional audio connections to the component inputs from the TV to the receiver. Splitters are required because there is only one audio output from the TV and three component devices supported. I wanted to avoid the extra audio cables.
